East Riding Council - Bridlington Environmental Action Partnership
The East Riding of Yorkshire is tackling liveability issues in areas with multiple deprivation and at the same time, close the gap in the quality of life experienced when compared to residents living in more affluent areas.
In 2006, the Council (acting as the accountable body) and its partners set up Advance Bridlington, a neighbourhood management programme in Bridlington South. An area that is amongst the three per cent most deprived in the country. Grant funding was made through the Safer Stronger Communities Fund and this was matched with European Regional Development Fund to increase the funding available to over £2m.
The programme and its outcomes are now embedded within the first generation Local Area Agreement. Taking this unique step has allowed the Local Strategic Partnership to influence improvements on-the-ground, with quarterly monitoring on performance.
The Advance Bridlington programme has achieved much, particularly in terms of outcomes delivered on-the-ground, and the involvement of residents in giving them a voice about services. Improvements can be seen in the area, most obviously in relation to the physical environment. The second quality of life residents’ survey carried out in 2008 shows increased satisfaction rates with the cleaner, greener, safer agendas.
