West Yorkshire Police Authority - Crime Mapping for the Masses

The Home Office is asking every region across the country to make local monthly crime statistics available to their residents by the summer of 2008. The West Yorkshire Police Authority’s website http://www.beatcrime.info/ meets this requirement and enhancements to the site over 2008 will ensure we stay ahead.  It’s the first and only website in the country to give residents the local crime picture in detail.

All residents need to do is enter their West Yorkshire postcode, select a crime type and then view the crime picture on their local beat – either as dots on maps marking the approximate location of crimes reported in the previous month or as bar charts comparing monthly crime levels over time. It’s information the public can relate to directly.

In many instances, people find there is actually less crime occurring than they feared.  If people are concerned about local crime levels, the site will help them do something about it.  There are links to advice and information containing practical ideas about how to prevent crime, as well details of how to get in touch with a member of the local Neighbourhood Policing Team and examples of what that Team is doing to help beat crime.
