Selby District Council - District Night-Safe Marshals

Selby District Council - District Night-Safe Marshals

The ‘Night-Safe Marshals’ initiative is a collaboration between Selby District Council and North Yorkshire Police currently funded through Selby District Community Safety Partnership.

Night-Safe Marshals are registered door staff that patrol areas recognised as hotspots of alcohol related disorder and violence between 10pm and 2am on Friday and Saturdays nights and Bank Holidays.

During the first pilot period over Christmas 2007/8, recorded violent crime reduced by 39% and overall crime by 21%.  Evaluation shows that the Marshals help the public to feel safer when socialising, door staff and licensees are grateful of the extra support and the police are reporting significant reductions in calls for service and recorded crimes.  In the latest evaluation, between 1 March and 31 May 2008, compared against the same period in 2007 violent crime is down 49% and all crime is down 39% within the Marshal patrolled area.

This success has led to the project receiving an additional £30,000 funding through the Local Area Agreement (LAA) stretch target pump priming fund. This secures the Night-Safe Marshals project until 31 May 2009.

Sustainability is being sort through the Council’s Licensing Department, North Yorkshire Police, licensees and other businesses associated with the night-time economy.  All are keen to ensure the project continues.
