Looking Beyond Our Shores

North East Lincolnshire Council - The Seafood Trade Corriodor

North East Lincolnshire Council - The Seafood Trade Corridor

North East Lincolnshire is the centre of seafood trade for the UK with over 70% of seafood consumed in the UK being processed here. Over 8000 people and 400 companies are employed directly in Humber seafood processing. The decline in European quotas demands new partnerships are forged worldwide to allow this industry to survive and grow.

This project was conceived to build such partnerships with mutual benefits for participating countries. The livelihoods of millions of fishermen in different countries are dependent on this trade, 6.2m in Indonesia alone. The “Trade Corridor” concept allows both trade partners to share benefits - expanding two-way trade means everyone will win.

The annual UK/Indonesia trade meetings involving our Prime Minister and Trade Secretary have discussed and promoted this project with their counterparts from Indonesia.  The Duke of York, the President of Indonesia and their Minister of Trade discussed the project in Indonesia after briefing from UKTI.  The Minister of Fisheries from Indonesia arrived in Grimsby in May to formally open the “Trade Corridor”. The first shipment of fish from Indonesia arrived on 13th June and both countries look forward to an expanding trade relationship – with an estimated value of £25m.
