South Yorkshire Joint Authorities - Webcasting
Members of the public can now watch webcasts of South Yorkshire Joint Authority meetings over the internet.
Video cameras at the authority meetings capture live information enabling everyone to view the meeting from the comfort of their own home. An archive facility is available allowing people to watch specific items of interest.
There have been 9000 viewings of the Authorities’ webcasts in the past year. The initiative is a new way of keeping members of the public informed of the latest community safety, public transport and pensions issues. It also increases accessibility, openness and transparency and therefore, accountability.
Webcasting has the potential to remove a number of barriers to citizen participation in the business of the Joint Authorities.
Webcasting has the potential to increase public understanding of the role and work of the South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Authority, South Yorkshire Police Authority, South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority and South Yorkshire Pensions Authority.
Considerable efficiencies can be gained from webcasting.
The cost of the project has been relatively low and met within existing budgets. The technical operation has been easy and smooth.
Webcasting has provided another means of engaging with local people as part of the Joint Authorities’ approach which regards them as partners for making far reaching and sustained improvements in community safety, public transport and pension provision.
