Members Regional Scrutiny Network: LEPs, City Regions and Europe - Wednesday 28th March 2012
In 2010, the Coalition Government invited bids for 'Local Enterprise Partnerships' (LEPs) to bring together the private and public sectors to promote jobs, growth and prosperity at a local level. The areas to be covered should be ‘functional economic areas’ - the boundaries in which people live, work and play.
Since then, the government has approved applications from LEPs that cover the whole of Yorkshire & Humber.
LEPs are based on a relationship between the public and private sector and a strong commitment to work together to ensure the growth of a rebalanced economy.
INTERREG is a European Union funded programme that helps Europe’s regions form partnerships to work together on common projects.
By sharing knowledge and experience, these partnerships enable the regions involved to develop new solutions to economic, social and environmental challenges.
Both these areas are of great interest to scrutiny members across the region, given that they impact, in different ways on the wellbeing of our residents. The event provides the opportunity to become better informed about them and to critically assess plans going forward.
The event will consider:
• The implications arising from the establishment of LEPS
• The opportunities presented by involvement in European activities
• The challenges this presents for Overview and Scrutiny
• What activities scrutiny members might usefully focus on in addressing these challenges
