Influencing how local government delivers for local communities
LGYH aims to ensure that local authorities are at the forefront of debates and that their democratic mandate is key to regional accountability. Our role involves influencing at local, regional, national and international level. Key influencing activities include:
- Continuing to establish effective networks in the region to support and inform our influencing role e.g. support to the Regional Chief Executives' Group
- Collaborating with other regional bodies on issues of common purpose e.g Yorkshire Forward and Government Office for Yorkshire and Humber >> Further details about Who's who in the region
- Working with public sector across the region e.g. police authorities and the newly established Regional Strategic Health Authority to ensure that local government issues are key to their agendas and are taken account of
- Providing support to regional elected member representatives on external bodies such as the Yorkshire Regional Flood Defence Committee and Health Transition Board to ensure that the needs of the region are represented
- Influencing central government policy and working with specific government departments e.g. Communities and Local Government, Department of Health, Home Office and Treasury
- Further developing our relationship with national bodies such as the Local Government Association and influencing the development of their work
- Providing support to the European Officers network in partnership with Yorkshireurope, supporting our regional representatives on the Committee of the regions, working with the European Strategy Board and ensuring councils are fully aware of opportunities
- Responding to consultations on behalf of authorities in the region
