Economic downturn

Local Authority Leaders, Chief Executives and Directors are coming together for a seminar with the Minister for Local Government, John Healey and the Minister for Yorkshire and Humber, Rosie Winterton on Friday 5 December to share learning and good practise in response to the economic downturn.

The event is being organised by Local Government Yorkshire and Humber (LGYH) and YoHr Space (the Regional Improvement and Efficiency Partnership) to bring together Local Authority and Regional Government representatives to analyse the impact on the region of the downturn and what can be done to help local communities and businesses. The main focus of the meeting is to analyse the current situation and share good practise and learning, by encouraging local authorities to share information about what they are doing locally to alleviate the difficulties caused by the downturn in the economy.

Over 90 people are due to attend the event in Magna in Rotherham to speak with the attending government ministers, take part in panel discussions and workshops. As well as the regions Local Authorities, representatives from Local Government Yorkshire and Humber, Yorkshire Forward, Government Office for Yorkshire and the Humber, the New Local Government Network and ERBEDU will be taking part in the discussions.

Councillor Arthur Barker, Chair of LGYH said: 'Across the region we are committed to working together to ensure that we are best prepared to deal with the problems and issues resulting from the current economic downturn. We have organised this event because we wanted to share some of the good work that is already going on and provide the learning to other authorities who might want to follow the same path.

'It is particularly noteworthy that as well as John Healey and Rosie Winterton we have so many local authorities attending and so much representation from our regional partners. This shows the commitment and drive that we have across Yorkshire and Humber to ensure that we are in a strong position to deal with the economic downturn.'

Regional Minister Rosie Winterton said: 'I'm really pleased to be able to join local government leaders to discuss how local authorities throughout Yorkshire & the Humber are responding to the economic downturn. I know that local authorities in our region have acted quickly with practical support for families and businesses during these tough times. Friday's event is a good opportunity to share best practice and learn from each other.'

John Healey Local Government Minister said. 'No-one can be certain how the current sharp slowdown will develop in Yorkshire and the Humber - or anywhere else. It will hit different areas in different ways to different degrees.

'This needs responsive action at every level - international, national, regional and local, and it's why yesterday we introduced legislation to pass even more economic powers and responsibilities to local areas and regions. This will make it easier for areas to take local decisions and action, become more resilient in seeing through current economic difficulties and better placed to make the most of the upturn that will follow'.
