Making a difference awards 2008
Local Government Yorkshire and Humber (LGYH) held its third annual awards on 18th November. The awards celebrate councils, police and fire authorities throughout Yorkshire and Humber who have gone that extra mile and 'made a difference' to the lives of local people.
The Making a Difference Awards are held every year and are presented to teams, individuals and authorities who have excelled over the previous year. The awards for 2008 were held in Harrogate International Centre and were attended by over 350 front line workers from the regions authorities and elected members. Speaking at the awards were LGYH Chair, Councillor Arthur Barker and LGYH Chief Executive Carole Hassan. The awards were presented by the comedian Dominic Holland who said he not only had a great time but that he was pleasantly surprised by the quality and variety of the winners.
All the nominations are judged by a panel of indendent judges who match each nomination to a set of criteria for each award. This year we had over 110 nominations.

Councillor Arthur Barker, Chair of LGYH said; 'The Making a Difference Awards are a great way for the region to come together and celebrate the achievements of the past year. Yorkshire and Humber are recognised nationally for a lot of their good work and I welcome opportunities, such as this one provided by Local Government Yorkshire and Humber, where we can show how effective our local authorities are.
It is particularly noteworthy that Rotherham Council were awarded Council, Fire or Police Authority of the Year as the high profile work they have delivered in the past year, including the Dolly Parton's Imagination Library and Jamie Oliver's Ministry of Food have been exceptional.'
Carole Hassan, Chief Executive of LGYH said: 'The awards this year were a tremendous success and included two special achievement awards. LGYH took the opportunity to thank two of the regions Leaders for their commitment to regional working including Cllr Peter Box for his seven years as Chair of the Yorkshire and Humber Assembly; and Cllr Arthur Barker for his work on sustainable development, climate change and his leadership of LGYH. Both have achieved a lot and it seemed only fitting that we take this opportunity as a region to say thanks.'
