Chair of Independent Sustainability Board appointed
Local Government Yorkshire and Humber (LGYH) and Yorkshire Forward can announce that Leader of Hambleton District Council, Councillor Arthur Barker, has been appointed as Chair of the new Yorkshire and Humber Independent Sustainability Board. Arthur has been closely involved in sustainable development from a regional perspective for a number of years: for the past five years has chaired the region’s Climate Change Partnership and also from April 1st he will take up an appointment as Chair of the Yorkshire Regional Flood Defence Committee. Councillor Barker will be stepping down as Leader of Hambleton District Council in May in order to fulfil these new duties and commit himself to the Independent Sustainability Board and Regional Flood Defence Committee.
On accepting his appointment, Arthur said: “The new Board provides an exciting opportunity to add value to the formulation of the Yorkshire and Humber Strategy and I am looking forward to working with colleagues to assist in developing a more sustainable region. After 7 years as Leader of Hambleton District Council I will be standing down in May to commit my time and effort to both the Independent Sustainable Development Board and the Flood Defence Committee to maximise their impact on the region. I look forward to the challenge that this new role will bring”
The Independent Sustainable Development Board has been introduced as part of the regional governance arrangement to champion the principles of sustainable development, advise on how regional structures, strategies and priorities can support sustainable economic growth.
Cllr Roger Stone, Chair of Local Government Yorkshire and Humber said; “Yorkshire Forward and Local Government Yorkshire and Humber have put considerable time and effort into the recruitment process including not only getting the correct membership in place but also ensuring the continued support of the Joint Regional Board and Regional Executive Group. With the appointment of Councillor Barker we are now in the best position to enable the effective functioning of the Independent Sustainability Board going forward.”
The membership includes posts nominated by sectors and Functional Sub Regions as well as open recruitment. Incorporating the guidance received from the Joint Regional Board, this membership reflects the breadth of sustainable development issues. This will enable the Board to work to the broad definitions of sustainable development and sustainable economic growth, helping the region to simultaneously achieve social, economic and environmental goals.
