Latest Audit Commission Results

Councils across the region continue to perform well

Councils across the Yorkshire and Humber are performing well according to the latest assessment by the Audit Commission. Nine of the region’s 22 councils were said to be performing ‘well’, with half of the region’s councils performing at least ‘adequately’.

As well as the performance of councils, the new assessments also look at the way public services, including councils, fire service and primary care trusts, work together to improve the quality of life in each area. The Oneplace site not only rates each public authority’s performance but also highlights major strengths and problems with a system of red and green flags.

Seven programmes in the region also received green flag ratings for demonstrating exceptional performance or improvement that other public services could learn from. These included the Leeds Ahead initiative to support business in deprived communities, North East Lincolnshire for increasing the number of teenagers in education, employment or training. North Yorkshire promoting independence among the elderly and York’s work to support disabled children.

Commenting on the results, Carole Hassan, Chief Executive of Local Government Yorkshire and Humber said; “I am delighted that just under half of our councils have been highlighted as performing well, and I am extremely proud of the good work going on in the region that has been awarded the prestigious green flag status; showcasing some excellent and successful projects that are taking place in Yorkshire and Humber.

“However we must not be complacent, public services face many challenges in the current economic climate. It is extremely important for all councils to continue to strive for excellence, and maintain successful working practises individually, and in partnership with other public sector organisations throughout the region.”
