Local Government works with regional MPs to boost economy

Scarborough Borough Council and Local Government Yorkshire & Humber (LGYH) met with MP’s in Westminster last week to form a working group to reinvigorate the local economies and communities of Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.

Cllr Derek Bastiman of Scarborough Borough Council, alongside officers of Scarborough Borough Council and LGYH met with the group of cross party MP’s to establish an All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG).

Known as the APPG for Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire the group consists of MP’s of all political persuasions from throughout the region. The group have identified three key target areas of renewable energy, transport infrastructure and tourism and culture as their focus over the coming months.

Following the meeting Cllr Bastiman, Scarborough Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Strategic Planning and Regeneration said:

“The meeting is a very positive step forward for our region. MP’s have agreed to put aside politics and work towards the common aim of driving forward our economy and placing the region at the heart of the UK and Europe. This APPG approach is something we have been working to instigate for some time and one that we support wholeheartedly. We have a unique offer in this region and by working together we can truly benefit our local economies.

“We will be working closely with our colleagues in Westminster to assist in setting the agenda for this group and identifying actions to drive forward our economy.”

Reflecting its cross-party commitment, the APPG will be jointly Chaired by Andrew Percy, Conservative MP for Brigg & Goole, and Barry Sheerman, Labour MP for Huddersfield. A formal launch event and meeting will be held in March of this year, where a number of high profile people from throughout the region will be involved. The launch will also act as a showcase for all things great about Yorkshire and Humber and show off our true potential to contribute to the national economy.
