New LGYH Appointments 2011

Councillor Peter Box CBE, Leader of Wakefield Council has been appointed the new Chair of Local Government Yorkshire and Humber (LGYH). LGYH have also appointed four new Vice Chairs. Cllr. Box will be the next Chair between 2011 and 2013, replacing Cllr. Roger Stone, Leader of Rotherham MB Council who has been the Chair for the past two years.

Cllr. Box said: “I am pleased that I have been appointed by my peers to be the next Chair of Local Government Yorkshire and Humber. LGYH has a great track record of bringing Local Authorities together across geographical and political party boundaries to voice concerns about key issues, ensuring that not only is the voice of Yorkshire and Humber represented as one, but also that government works best for our people and communities.

As Chair of LGYH over the next two years I will ensure that Councils, Police, Fire and National Park Authorities continue to work together for the good of our region. We have all faced severe financial challenges in the past year, making the need for collaboration and partnership all the more important. I will work with my Vice Chairs, and all the other political Leaders from across Yorkshire and Humber to make sure that Local Government in the region remains the most effective, democratic and efficient part of the public sector. Only by working together, and speaking as one, can we achieve this.”

Cllr. Box has been Leader of Wakefield Council since 1998, having been first elected as a Councillor there in 1982. Since his appointment Councillor Box has succeeded in leading the transformation of Wakefield Council into a modern and efficient authority, resulting in a 4 star “Excellent” authority rating and being voted Britain’s “Best Small City for Business”. Peter was Chair of the Regional Assembly for Yorkshire and the Humber from 2002-until its abolition in 2009 and Chair of the English Regions Network from 2008-2009. Peter became Chair of the LGA’s Economy and Transport Board in 2010 and sits on the LGA Executive. As well as being Chair of Local Government Yorkshire and Humber Peter is Chair of the Leeds City Region Leader’s Board, and a Board Member of the Leeds City Region Local Enterprise Partnership. In 2010 Peter was awarded a CBE for Services to Local Government.

Cllr. Roger Stone, outgoing Chair of LGYH and new Vice Chair said: “Peter has been the sole Vice Chair for the past two years and it has been a productive and interesting time. Despite serious challenges facing local government he has helped considerably in bringing political Leaders together to ensure that collectively we are as efficient and effective as possible. Peter is extremely dedicated to local government and to ensuring that services are delivered with local people and communities at their centre. I have enjoyed working with him in the past two years and look forward to supporting him as Chair in the years to come.”

Joining Cllr. Box as Chair will be four Vice Chairs, each representing one of the sub-regions. Representing Leeds City Region will be Cllr. Joanne Battye (Calderdale Council); Sheffield City Region Cllr Roger Stone (Rotherham MB Council); Local Government York and North Yorkshire Cllr Tom Fox (Scarborough Borough Council) and Hull and Humber Ports Cllr Stephen Parnaby (East Riding of Yorkshire Council).
