Cohesion

Yorkshire and Humber is one of the most diverse regions in England in terms of its population and range of neighbourhoods, villages, towns and cities.

Throughout Yorkshire and Humber we have built successful relationships across all councils, fire and police authorities and have developed a great spirit and appetite for collaboration. This is unique to our region and we will continue to build on this and support collaborative arrangements to secure improvements across the whole region.

We have prioritised the building of effective working practices with those partners who can help us achieve this. We will all be accountable for these actions and recognise the need to work collaboratively at a local and regional level to ensure success. Through strategic, political, and community leadership we are working together with our partners in developing and delivering the priorities for our places.

We are supporting councils and partners in responding to those demographic changes within their areas resulting from both international and internal migration and will share the insight and understanding developed by the regions local authorities and partners on community cohesion.

Examples of the activity being undertaken in this region to support our desire for cohesive communities includes:

  • The introduction of a Regional Community Cohesion statement which reflects our commitment to cohesion and will underpin our activities to develop fully integrated neighbourhoods and communities
  • The creation of an effective regional cohesion network
  • An increased mainstreaming of community cohesion activity
  • Raising the awareness of elected members and officers
  • The development of an enhanced communication strategy
  • Raised awareness of the extent and value of existing regional activity
  • Because of the extensive activity being undertaken within this region we have been identified as the lead region for cohesion/Prevent and we are striving to create a methodology which will allow local authorities and their partners to fully integrate those strategies which impact upon community cohesion.
