Focusing Development on the Settlement Network
What is the challenge?
- The current trend for dispersed development needs to be redressed through identifying the capacity of places to accommodate development and understanding the current and potential future roles of places within the Region. This is a challenging shift-change for many parts of the Region.
- The RSS Settlement network names and groups particular places in the Region into different categories. Local Authorities need to identify Local Service Centres through their LDF and may identify additional Principal Towns.
What are we doing?
- Providing guidance on local Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessments – ongoing.
- Helping to develop sounder Core Strategies and Site Allocations Documents – ongoing.
- Commenting on Major Planning Applications – ongoing.
- Assisting on Employment Land Reviews in conjunction with Yorkshire Forward – ongoing.
What will we do next?
- Research on capacity and land supply – initial stages of research completed for RSS Update / further research ongoing - deadline tbc.
- Further our understanding of the roles of settlements including potential for further work on town centre/retail capacity.
What outcomes does this work help to achieve?
- The long term trend of population and investment dispersal away from the Regional and Sub-Regional Cities and Towns has been reversed.
- Cities and Towns and been transformed and are attractive, cohesive and safe places where people want to live, work, invest and spend time in.
- Principal Towns are fulfilling their role as focal points for rural communities.
- More sound core strategies are delivered.
