Increasing Renewable Energy capacity and promoting greater use of local renewable energy

What is the challenge?

  • Policies on renewable energy and the need for on-site renewables are coming forward in Core Strategies, but there is still some confusion around their implementation.
  • The Government has recently launched the UK Renewable Energy Strategy which sets challenging requirements for regional, sub-regional and local bodies.

What are we doing?

  • We asked Local Authorites which specific areas were in need of further clarification in a scoping note.
  • In response to this we and Yorkshire Forward commissioned a Renewable Energy Toolkit to enable Local Authorities to deal with the issue of microgeneration, decentralised and low carbon energy.
  • The Renewble Energy Toolkit has been published - see below for link.
  • The toolkit was launched in Leeds on 7th October 2008.    For more details of this event click here.

The Renewable Energy toolkit has now been prepared and is available to view on a dedicated web-site at www.renewable-energy-toolkit.org.uk

What will we do next?

  • Identify a region-wide capacity for delivering renewable and low carbon options.  This work will progress through the sub-regional planning assessments and sub-regional working arrangements as part of the Integrated Regional Strategy.
  • A paper setting out our current approach is available here.

What outcomes does this work help to achieve?

  • Environmental quality has been raised, resource demands from development minimised, and the region is responding proactively to the global and local effects of climate change.
  • Core Strategy evidence base.
  • More sound Core Strategies adopted.
  • Better quality Development Management decision making at a local level.
  • Closer working between Building Control, Development Management and Planning Policy.
