Providing accommodation for Gypsy and Traveller communities

What is the challenge?

  • There is a need to address shortfalls in the provision for the Gypsy and Traveller Communities in the Region.
  • Local assessments provide details of need.  These now need translating into Core Strategy and Site Allocation Development Plan Documents.

What are we doing?

  • Liaising with the Gypsy and Traveller Communitiies through a Liaison Group which meets quarterly
  • Commenting on LDF preparation so as to support positive policies and site allocations
  • Appointed independent consultants to bechmark the results of local Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Assessements.  The report is available here.

What will we do next?

  • Share lessons learnt from the bechmarking report with local authorites
  • Further capacity building with the Gypsy and Traveller Community, especially with regard to LDF preparation and allocations.

What outcomes will this work help to deliver?

  • Inequalities have been reduced, the health of the population has improved, and currently excluded communities and areas requiring regeneration have benefitted from development and investment
  • Sound core strategies and allocations DPDs
