Providing accommodation for Gypsy and Traveller communities
What is the challenge?
- There is a need to address shortfalls in the provision for the Gypsy and Traveller Communities in the Region.
- Local assessments provide details of need. These now need translating into Core Strategy and Site Allocation Development Plan Documents.
What are we doing?
- Liaising with the Gypsy and Traveller Communitiies through a Liaison Group which meets quarterly
- Commenting on LDF preparation so as to support positive policies and site allocations
- Appointed independent consultants to bechmark the results of local Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Assessements. The report is available here.
What will we do next?
- Share lessons learnt from the bechmarking report with local authorites
- Further capacity building with the Gypsy and Traveller Community, especially with regard to LDF preparation and allocations.
What outcomes will this work help to deliver?
- Inequalities have been reduced, the health of the population has improved, and currently excluded communities and areas requiring regeneration have benefitted from development and investment
- Sound core strategies and allocations DPDs
